The short answer
“Capping” means fitting metal caps over the two ends of each rudraksha, where the thread or wire enters. It protects the bead ends and gives a finished, jewellery look. It is done in three main ways:
- caps on thread;
- caps linked bead to bead with wire;
- a single capped bead as a pendant.
925 silver is 92.5% silver. German silver is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc and contains no silver. It looks similar when new, costs much less, and can irritate skin in people sensitive to nickel.
Capping is priced mostly by the silver’s weight and the labour per bead. Ask for the metal, the weight and the making charge in writing, and test any valuable bead before it is capped, because caps hide its ends.
The main capping styles
| Style | How it is made | Look and feel | Durability | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caps on thread | A cup-shaped cap at each end of the bead; the thread passes through both caps and the bead | Light, flexible; thread visible between beads | Thread wears and needs replacing; caps can be reused | Bracelets, malas |
| Caps linked with wire | Each bead capped, then joined to the next by a wire loop through the caps | A chain-like, rigid look; no thread | Strong; no thread to rot; heavier; repairs need a silversmith | Kanthas, premium malas |
| Single bead pendant | One bead with decorative caps and a bail (loop) for a chain | Jewellery-like | Good | 1, 5 or high-mukhi beads |
| Full silver construction | Silver links and fittings throughout | Heaviest and most “jewellery” | Very durable | Kanthas, special pieces |
A knotted mala cannot be wire-capped. Wire-linked malas have no knots between beads. If you want traditional knotting, choose thread with caps, or no caps.
925 silver vs German silver
| 925 sterling silver | German silver (nickel silver) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | 92.5% silver, usually with copper | An alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, with no silver |
| Tarnish | Darkens to grey or black over time; polishes back | Can yellow or darken; some is plated |
| Skin | Usually well tolerated | Contains nickel, a common contact allergen |
| Value | Has scrap value as silver | Little metal value |
| Hallmark | Can be BIS hallmarked (voluntary for silver); HUID if hallmarked after 1 Sept 2025 | Cannot carry a silver hallmark |
| Cost | Higher (silver price + making) | Much lower |
Our silver jewellery guide explains sterling silver, plating and hallmarks in more detail.
Watch the wording. “Silver colour”, “oxidised” or “silver-tone” usually means not 925. “92.5”, “925” or “sterling” should be backed by weight on the bill and, ideally, a hallmark.
How capping is priced
The price of silver capping has three parts:
- Silver weight × the day’s silver rate. Wire-linked and full-silver builds use more silver, which is why some sellers quote them only after the order.
- Making charge, per cap or per bead, which reflects labour.
- Bead count and size. Larger beads need larger caps.

The gap between German silver and 925 in these examples is the silver itself. If a “925” quote is close to a German silver quote, ask how much silver is in it.
What to check before capping
- Authenticate first. Caps cover the ends of the bead, where natural holes and line endings are easiest to see. For valuable beads, get a laboratory report (ideally with X-ray) before capping. Our laboratory guide explains the options.
- Photograph the bare beads with a scale, so you can recognise them later.
- Agree in writing: metal (925 or German silver), approximate silver weight, making charge, style and finished length.
- Ask about glue. Some caps are glued as well as crimped. Glue can trap moisture against the bead.
- Check the finish: caps should sit flush, with no sharp edges and no gaps where the bead can rotate and wear.
Caring for capped rudraksha
- Keep caps dry. Water trapped under a cap can stain the bead and corrode the joint.
- Polish silver with a dry silver cloth. Avoid silver dips and acids near the beads.
- Store with an anti-tarnish strip in humid weather.
- Oil the beads sparingly, keeping oil off the silver where possible.

FAQ
Is German silver real silver?
No. It is a copper-nickel-zinc alloy with no silver. The name is historical.
Why did my capped mala turn black?
Sterling silver tarnishes, reacting with sulphur compounds in the air, sweat and some cosmetics. It is normal and can be polished off. German silver can also discolour.
Can capping be removed later?
Caps on thread can usually be removed and reused when restringing. Wire-linked caps need a silversmith and may not be reusable.
Does capping affect the rudraksha’s traditional effect?
That is a question of belief, and traditions differ. Practically, capping protects the bead ends and changes the weight and look.
Should I ask for a hallmark on silver caps?
Silver hallmarking is voluntary in India. If the piece is hallmarked, it should show the BIS mark, “SILVER”, a purity grade and a HUID that you can check in the BIS Care app. Otherwise, rely on the bill stating purity and weight.
