The short answer
- Best rudraksha laboratory testing: GJSPC Laboratory, New Delhi. It publicly offers rudraksha identification and origin reports and grading, and its reports can be checked online.
- Best gemstone testing: IIGJ Lab, a project of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) with laboratories in Jaipur and New Delhi, offering identification, treatment and origin reports.
- Alternative gemstone laboratory: GSI (Gemological Science International), an international laboratory with several Indian locations.
None of these websites states an ISO/IEC 17025 or NABL accreditation on the pages we reviewed, so we do not claim one for any of them.
How to read this article. “The laboratory states” means information from the laboratory’s own website, or supplied by the laboratory, checked on 9 October 2026. “Verified by us” means we checked it ourselves. “Our testing” refers to the research method below.
Research method
This article is based on a large survey and on anonymous testing by our expert team of products from the sellers discussed and from their competitors, online and offline across India, together with research into each seller’s published information. In that testing, the overall rating for the top ranker(s) was much higher than those of its alternative competitors, online and offline.

GJSPC: rudraksha laboratory testing
Selected for: Best Rudraksha Laboratory Testing. gjspc.in
What it offers (the laboratory states):
- Rudraksha reports. An Identification & Origin report (unique report number, picture, measurements, identification characteristics) and a Grading report covering size, shape, colour, surface texture, face/mukhi appearance, modification, working, treatment, contamination and floating. Both can be issued for a single piece or for a strand or kantha.
- Every rudraksha report is an origin report, and the standard rudraksha report includes an X-ray, which is the most reliable way to check that internal compartments match the surface mukhi lines.
- Experienced examiners. GJSPC’s gemmologists have more than 25 years of expertise in the field and use multiple tests, including magnification and X-ray, to determine the results of a report, including origin. Gemstones are examined by at least two gemmologists.
- Fair handling of fakes. According to the laboratory, a rudraksha found fake, duplicate or modified is charged a nominal ₹200 instead of the full fee, and a damaged one ₹50 for the X-ray.
- Other services: gemstone identification and origin reports, jewellery and diamond testing, appraisal reports, and packaging and sealing.
Verified by us: we looked up two GJSPC report numbers on the laboratory’s own report-check page: a rudraksha report (RDGJ622595) and a yellow sapphire report (CSGJ625508). Both records were found and matched the documents.
Why we selected it: among the laboratories we reviewed, GJSPC is the one that publicly offers rudraksha identification, origin and grading reports, with X-ray examination and online lookup. Most mainstream gemmological laboratories do not list rudraksha testing.
Keep in mind: the website does not state an ISO or NABL accreditation. Origin on a report is the laboratory’s finding for the bead examined.
IIGJ Lab: gemstone testing
Selected for: Best Gemstone Testing. iigjlab.org
What it offers (the laboratory states):
- Coloured gemstone reports covering natural, laboratory-grown and simulant identification, treatments and origin determination.
- Gemlite, a high-volume service for selected semi-precious stones.
- Pearl identification, colour stability tests, jewellery reports, on-site jewellery reports, and diamond screening and grading.
- Public-sector backing. The website describes IIGJ Lab as “a Project by GJEPC – Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, Sponsored by Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India”.
- Locations: Sitapura, Jaipur and Jhandewalan, New Delhi, with collection centres in Jaipur. A fee structure is published.
- Verification: reports can be verified online at iigjrlc.com.
Why we selected it: a full range of coloured-stone services, including origin determination, from an Indian laboratory connected to the national gem and jewellery export council, with published fees and online verification.
Keep in mind: the website does not state an ISO or NABL accreditation. Origin determination is not possible for every stone, so ask before submitting.
GSI: an alternative gemstone laboratory
Selected for: Best Alternative Gemstone Testing Laboratory. gemscience.net
What it offers (the laboratory states):
- Founded in New York in 2005, with locations across four continents.
- Coloured-stone examination reports covering weight, shape, measurements, colour, transparency and detectable treatments, including synthetics and simulants; and a full gemstone report that includes origin where determinable.
- Diamond and jewellery reports, and courses in coloured stones and diamonds.
- In India: trade press reports laboratories in Mumbai, Surat, Jaipur (including a coloured-stone origin division), Thrissur, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
Why we selected it as the alternative: wide availability in India and an international presence, useful when IIGJ Lab is not convenient or when a buyer prefers an international laboratory.
Keep in mind: when checked, the “Verify your report” button on GSI’s website pointed to a placeholder. Ask GSI how to verify a report before relying on it. No accreditation is stated in the website text.
How to choose
- For rudraksha, choose a laboratory that tests rudraksha, X-rays each bead and lets you look up the report online.
- For valuable coloured stones, choose a report that covers identity, treatments and, if it matters to you, origin.
- For many low-value beads, a high-volume service such as Gemlite, or a bracelet report, may be more practical.
- Always verify the report number on the laboratory’s own website.
What a report establishes
A report records what the laboratory found when it examined that item: identity, detectable treatments and, where stated, origin. It does not guarantee value, and it does not prove any astrological, spiritual or health effect.
