The short answer
Bead bracelets are sized by wrist circumference. Measure snugly around your wrist, just below the wrist bone, with a soft tape or a strip of paper. Then add room for comfort:
- about 1 cm (½ inch) for a close fit;
- about 1.5–2 cm for a looser fit.
Bigger beads need a little more room, because they sit further out from the wrist.
Rigid bangles are sized by inner diameter, because they must pass over the hand. Indian bangle sizes such as 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8 mean 2 inches plus 4, 6 or 8 sixteenths of an inch: about 57 mm, 60 mm and 64 mm across the inside.
Step 1: measure your wrist
- Wrap a soft tape around your wrist just below the wrist bone, where a bracelet sits.
- Keep it snug but not tight: it should touch the skin all round without pressing.
- Read the measurement where the tape meets. That is your wrist size.
- No tape? Wrap a strip of paper, mark where it overlaps, and measure the strip with a ruler. Some sellers offer printable rulers; print them at 100% / actual size, never “fit to page”.
- Measure twice, and measure the hand you will wear it on. Wrists can differ slightly, and wrists swell a little in heat and late in the day.
Step 2: choose your fit (bead and chain bracelets)
| Wrist size | Close fit (+1 cm) | Comfortable fit (+1.5 cm) | Loose fit (+2–2.5 cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 cm (5.5 in) | 15 cm | 15.5 cm | 16–16.5 cm |
| 15 cm (5.9 in) | 16 cm | 16.5 cm | 17–17.5 cm |
| 16 cm (6.3 in) | 17 cm | 17.5 cm | 18–18.5 cm |
| 17 cm (6.7 in) | 18 cm | 18.5 cm | 19–19.5 cm |
| 18 cm (7.1 in) | 19 cm | 19.5 cm | 20–20.5 cm |
| 19 cm (7.5 in) | 20 cm | 20.5 cm | 21–21.5 cm |
| 20 cm (7.9 in) | 21 cm | 21.5 cm | 22–22.5 cm |
Is a seller’s size the wrist or the bracelet? This matters.
- Some builders ask for your wrist and add the comfort room themselves. One builder we reviewed adds one bead for comfort.
- Others list the bracelet length.
Read the size note before choosing; otherwise you may add the allowance twice.
S, M and L have no standard meaning. One seller’s “M” may fit a 15 cm wrist and another’s a 17 cm wrist. Always check the centimetres.
Bead size changes the fit
Large beads sit further from the skin, so the inner circle is smaller than the bead-line length suggests. As a rule of thumb, add an extra 0.5 cm for 10 mm beads and 1 cm for 12 mm and larger, compared with 6–8 mm beads. Our crystal bead bracelet guide covers bead sizes and fit in more detail.
How many beads?
Beads needed ≈ bracelet length in mm ÷ bead diameter in mm.
| Bracelet length | 6 mm beads | 8 mm beads | 10 mm beads | 12 mm beads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 cm | 27 | 20 | 16 | 13 |
| 17 cm | 28 | 21 | 17 | 14 |
| 18 cm | 30 | 23 | 18 | 15 |
| 19 cm | 32 | 24 | 19 | 16 |
| 20 cm | 33 | 25 | 20 | 17 |
Rounded to the nearest bead. Spacers and clasps change the count; a clasp or magnetic lock usually replaces one or two beads.
One published builder formula uses wrist inches × 25 ÷ bead mm, plus one comfort bead. It gives a very similar result, because 1 inch is about 25 mm.
Bangle sizes in India
Indian bangle sizes are inner diameters in inches and sixteenths of an inch. The number after the point is sixteenths, not a decimal. The sources we checked agree: Ethera Diamonds’ chart gives 2-4 as 57.2 mm and 2-8 as 63.5 mm, and Ruaab’s guide gives 2.4 as 2.25 inches.
| Size | Inner diameter (inches) | Inner diameter (mm) | Inner circumference (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.2 | 2⅛ in | 54.0 | 170 |
| 2.4 | 2¼ in | 57.2 | 180 |
| 2.6 | 2⅜ in | 60.3 | 189 |
| 2.8 | 2½ in | 63.5 | 199 |
| 2.10 | 2⅝ in | 66.7 | 210 |
| 2.12 | 2¾ in | 69.9 | 220 |
Circumference = π × diameter, rounded. Brands may vary slightly; check the brand’s own chart.
How to find your bangle size:
- Easiest: measure the inside diameter of a bangle that already fits you comfortably, edge to edge across the widest inside point, excluding the metal’s thickness.
- Without a bangle: bring your thumb and little finger together as if putting on a bangle, and measure around the widest part of the hand with a tape. Divide by π (3.14) for the diameter, then pick the nearest size, rounding up.
- Openable bangles and kadas with a screw or hinge can be smaller, because they do not pass over the hand.
Buying online: avoid sizing problems
- Check whether the size is wrist, bracelet length or bangle inner diameter.
- Prefer sellers who state the size in cm or mm, not just S/M/L.
- Read the return or remake policy for custom and made-to-order sizes. Many custom pieces are not returnable, although some makers remake a wrong size. Our online buying checklist covers returns.
- For gold bangles, check hallmark, weight and making charges; see our gold buying guide.
FAQ
How long is a size 7 bracelet?
It depends on the seller. “7 inch” usually means a 7-inch (17.8 cm) bracelet length, which suits a wrist of about 6–6.5 inches. Some builders use 7 inches as the wrist size. Check which.
What does bangle size 2.6 mean?
An inner diameter of 2 and 6/16 inches, which is 2.375 inches or about 60 mm.
Should men and women use different charts?
No. Use the same method and your own measurement. Men’s wrists are often larger, so “men’s” bracelets are often longer, but your measurement is what counts.
My bracelet is too tight. Can it be resized?
Bead bracelets can be restrung with more beads. Rigid bangles can sometimes be enlarged slightly by a jeweller, depending on metal and design. Ask before buying.
Between two sizes, which should I choose?
For bead bracelets, the larger, unless you want a close fit. For bangles, the larger, because a bangle must pass over the hand.
